Robot City is partner and producer of the exhibition on Nicola and Giovanni Pisano “Nicola e Giovanni Pisano: Le origini della scultura moderna” curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, shown during the 2015 Expo in the Church of San Gottardo in Corte at Palazzo Reale, a part of the Duomo of Milan.
Robot City, through the use of robotic technlogy, has created a copy of “Madonna with Child” by Giovanni Pisano. Both Giovanni and his father, Nicola Pisano, are the protagonists of the exhibition in Milan, along with their masterpieces from the Battistero in Pisa and preserved in the Museo dell’Opera of the Duomo. These works were on exhibition in the Church of San Gottardo in Corte curated by Vittorio Sgarbi and under the artistic direction of Alberto Bartalini to be admired in all their stunning modernity, representing the archetype of modern sculpture.
The nine majestic statues that stood on the top frame of the Battistero in Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa were exposed for the rst time to the public with a rigorous respect for the environment. They will also be presented in a theatrical sequence, through a dialogue with the architecture of the church and its beautiful Giotto paintings which will serve as a backdrop.
An exact replica of the “Madonna with Child” sculpture made from Carrara marble was placed at the entrance of the recently renovated Church to accentuate the cultural value. This production was possible thanks to new techniques in 3D digital modeling and is an example of how innovation can come together with tradition to recreate works faithful to the original, and therefore be able to preserve the great heritage and history that surrounds us.
As noted by critics of art history, these sculptures represent how Nicola assimilates art and classical norms, which Giovanni then animates with a vehement and frenzied vitality: a continuity between tradition and innovation which serves as the basis of the events of Expo 2015.
